What Is Genetic Disorder - Patau Syndrome
Patient with Patau syndrome may present with symptoms and signs such as cleft lip, cleft palate, microcephaly, small eyes/ microphthalmia, severe mental retardation, holoprosencephaly,rocker bottom feet, polydactyly, umbilical hernia and congenital heart defect as well as congenital renal defect.
Patau syndrome occurs due to trisomy 13 as a result of meiotic non disjunction as well as mosaicism due to mitotic non disjunction of chromosome 13 in embryogenesis.
Patient with Patau syndrome may also occurs due to translocation between chromosome 13 and chromosome 14.
The fatality of Patau syndrome is within 1 year of birth.
The incidence of Patau syndrome will increase with maternal age.
