Chloramphenicol
Chloramphenicol is a broad spectrum antibiotic. Chloramphenicol will inhibit the synthesis of protein by inhibiting the transcription process. Chloramphenicol is useful in treating cases of typhoid, meningitis and H. influenza infection.
Chloramphenicol may lead to grey baby syndrome. Grey baby syndrome is characterized by vomiting, collapse of the circulation system and flaccidity.
Chloramphenicol can be given orally, intravenous route ( injection and infusion) and topical ( for bacterial eye infection). Chloramphenicol will be metabolized in the liver and excreted in the urine. Chloramphenicol may enter the central nervous system and cerebrospinal fluid.
The common side effects of chloramphenicol may include bone marrow depression and aplastic anemia.
