Memantine
Memantine is a NMDA receptor antagonist which is administered orally. Memantine is useful in treating patient with Alzheimer’s disease. Memantine may not have any effect on the degenerative condition. Memantine may only provide improvement in the memory impairment and cognitive symptomatic relief. The half life of memantine is approximately 60 - 80 hours. Memantine is well tolerated.
Memantine will reduce the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Memantine will cause the reduction in glutamate excitotoxicity due to prevention of calcium ions and sodium ions entry into the neurons. This is based on the open channel block of the NMDA receptors.
The common side effects of memantine may include drowsiness, agitation, confusion, hallucination, insomnia and dizziness.
