What Is Pharmacology - Methotrexate
Methotrexate
Methotrexate is known as anti cancer drug. Methotrexate is given intramuscularly, intravenously and intrathecally. Methotrexate is useful in treating patient with breast cancer, head cancer, lung cancer, neck cancer, choriocarcinoma and in children due to acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Methotrexate is known as anti metabolites with the ability to inhibit competitively dihydrofolate reductase.Methotrexate will be taken by the folate transport system. Methotrexate will inhibit DNA synthesis, inhibit the synthesis of thymidylate and inhibit synthesis of the purine.
Methotrexate may lead to myelosupression. In this case folinic acid is given to reduce the toxicity effect on bone marrow. Other common side effects may include pneumonitis, gastrointestinal disturbance and mucositis.
