What Is Pharmacology - Statin
Statin
Statin is useful in treating patient with hypercholesterolemia.Statin is also being used as a preventive measure against cardiac infarction mostly in atherosclerotic patient. Statin may prevent the development of atherosclerosis in patient with high level of cholesterol. The half life of statin is approximately 1-3 hours.
Statin is a lipid lowering drug which include simvastatin, lovastatin and atorvastatin. Statin will act to reduce hepatic synthesis of cholesterol which up regulate the synthesis of LDL receptor. Besides that statin will cause an increase in the clearance of the low density lipoprotein and cholesterol from plasma into the hepatic cells. Statin may also cause increase in the high density lipoprotein and lowering of the plasma triglycerides.
Statin is given with nicotinic acid, ezetimibe and colestyramine to increase its mode of action. Statin is given orally. The common side effects of statin may include rashes, pain in the muscle, insomnia and gastrointestinal disturbance. There may be angioedema and severe myositis. Statin may undergoes first pass metabolism. Statin will remain inactive until biotransformation in the liver.
